Giving Your Beard the Royal Treatment
Posted on |
A well-maintained beard is a thing of admiration nowadays. From short scruff to the full-grown mountain look, people love a good beard. However, with a great beard comes great skin frustrations without a proper skincare routine. Here are some tips to make sure you and your beard get the treatment you deserve.
Washing your face is so important
A lot of people think that washing your face is for beardless people, but that isn’t the case. Just because you have a layer of hair covering your face doesn’t mean you’re immune to dirty skin and breakouts. In fact, it is more important for you to wash your face now that you have facial hair. To maintain a clean and well-groomed look, you need to wash the skin under and around your facial hair.
The amount of times you need to wash your face varies based on your skin type. For people with oily skin, it’s recommended you wash your face at least twice a day, one time in the morning and once before bed. People with dry skin need hydration so it is important to wash three to four times a day. Can you wash your beard more than this if you feel like you’re getting breakouts? The answer is no. Your beard needs to maintain a certain amount of natural, essential oils. By washing it too much you will be stripping it of the important facial oils it needs to stay healthy.
Also, try to wash your face in warm water and rinse it in cool water. This will stimulate your pores and help you get rid of the build-up. Be sure to avoid hot water as it can easily dry out your face. The only time we recommend using hot water is to steam your pores. Take care to focus on the small spaces on your face such as under your bottom lip, in your fine lines, and along your hairline. While you’re washing, don’t scrub downward. Pull upward and in small circles to avoid unneeded wrinkles. While drying your face; always pat, don’t rub.
Choosing a facial wash
Did you know there are men’s facial washes that you can purchase anywhere you get bath/shower supplies? When washing your face, it’s imperative you try to buy one of these products. Try to avoid using things like bar soap or body wash, they can dry your face out if you use them too often. Shampoo can be used in a last-minute situation since you should use shampoo for your beard anyways.
When it comes to different beard washes, you need to understand how to choose the right products. While washing your face and, in fact, any part of your body, it’s always good to look for all-natural products. Especially since you will be using this product near your mouth, organic shampoos are a good option for your health. Not only that but unnatural products can strip your beard of healthy oils causing bald spots, dandruff, and hair damage. When choosing a shampoo avoid these three products:
- Alcohol-based products
- Cheaply made products with unknown additives
- Silicone-based products
Don't be afraid to exfoliate
Along with men’s facial wash, men’s exfoliating scrubs have become increasingly popular. Exfoliating can get rid of dead skin, as well as clean anything out of your pores that you may not have gotten with face wash. You can also use it in your beard to get rid of build-up from any dandruff-causing skin flakes. A good tip is to make sure you know your skin type before using these scrubs. Different skin types can suffer from too much exfoliation. However, no matter the skin type you’ll only need to exfoliate one to three times a week. Easy, right?
Moisture is a good thing.
Don’t be afraid to moisturize your skin and your beard to keep your skin hydrated. Your face needs to have some type of nourishing oils. All-natural lotions can provide that. There is a wide range of moisturizers that you can use for your facial hair as well. Selecting the right one is all up to your skin type.
Beard balm moisture
You can use oils or balms after you shower if you want to aid your beard’s growth. Beard oils and balms can combat itching or hair loss. When it comes to beard oils, it’s important to focus on the amount you use. Using too much can make your skin oily and breakout. So, the shorter the hair the fewer drops you should use. Also, when applying oils a boar bristled brush or natural wood comb should be used to help spread the oil. Avoid unnatural brushes and combs that are plastic. A plastic comb will easily strip your healthy beard of the oil you just applied and even pull out hair.
Beard balms are more suited for people with long facial hair or mustaches. Beard balm is not only used to moisturize, but it is also used to style. Balms are made with natural oils (like beard oil) as well as beeswax. The beeswax gives you the ability to style your facial hair and condition it to grow a certain way. If you typically have hairs that stick out of place, using a balm can train these hairs to grow in place.
If you’re more interested in your beard being soft and manageable, conditioners might be more your style. You can buy beard conditioner online or in certain stores, but regular conditioner will work (it is hair after all).
Having the beard you want is only a few simple steps away. It may take time to get your beard to grow evenly or to grow in full. But a few easy changes to your routine will make it look like you spend way more time and money on your beard than you do.
